Normalizing is a treatment that is used to “reset” the micostructure of a steel component. It is also used to refine, or shrink, the grain size in order to increase the yield strength. Normalizing provides uniformity of properties as well by ensuring that the grain size is homogenous throughout the entire cross section of a part.

CST normalizes parts that weigh up to 10,000 pounds and are as large as 8 ft. wide x 6 ft. tall x 17 ft. long. CST can normalize parts at temperatures up to 1850°F using one of a wide selection of furnaces to run special cycles including processing under protective atmosphere.

Normalizing versus other Heat Treatments

Normalizing is very similar to the treatment that is described as “full annealing”. Both heat treatments involve heating the steel part above the austenite transformation temperature and subsequently cooling it down back into the ferrite/pearlite temperature range without a rapid quench. However, normalizing always involves a controlled cooling cycle that is usually carried out using a blast of air to lower the temperature. Full annealing usually calls for a furnace cool. The controlled air blast of normalizing allows for the equilibrium transformation of austenite to ferrite/pearlite, and the mechanism of this change produces smaller, more uniform grains in the matrix of the microstructure.

Normalizing produces properties that can be described as falling somewhere in between an austenitize and quench and a full anneal. The yield strength and the tensile strength are greater in normalzing compared with a full anneal but less than that for a quench and temper. The ductility is greater when compared with a quench and temper but less than that of a full anneal. Normalzing is usually chosen as a treatment when the processing history of a part is unknown. It is also chosen if the thermal history of a part is so variable that the heat treater wants a reliable microstructure to start out with. Many military and aerospace specifications call for a normalizing treatment before a regular quench and temper to help eliminate this variability.
